When A Father Slut-Shames His Daughter

                                         demystify-abuse

“I remember when I was staying with my biological father. My cousins came around. Popsy said they should bring an extra bed to my room for one of them to crash.

The guy woke up at night, put a hand across my mouth and was trying to force my legs apart. He said he will kill me if I screamed or said a word.

I was calm. As he struggled to pull my pant I told him I wanted to pee. After much deliberation he let me go to pee. I remained in the bathroom till morning when my dad wanted to pee. He asked why I was locked in the bathroom by 4 am and I told him what happened. He said it was my fault… Why would I wear nightie. I didn’t even have boobs then.

He said I wanted to seduce the boy. That the boy’s father, my uncle is a pastor. The boy is too holy to want to rape me. I received the beating of my life that day. This is one of the many reasons why I will tell you, I hate my father with every drop of his blood in me.

And I wish he died”.

This is one of the battles young girls have to face almost every day of their lives. After escaping from an attempted rape, the society will blame you, even  your parents too.

It is quite sad that our fathers and mothers are so insensitive to the pains and battles we have to go through each time and day.

Are we going to use all our lives trying to escape from rapists and abusers, and also spend our lives having to excruciatingly explain to our parents the pain we went through or almost went through?

Our parents need to know that slut-shaming their children will in no way help curb the issue of rape and abuses, in stead it will hamper the confidence and esteem of the child.

This is a call to everyone, we desperately need to #DemystifyAbuse

  1. Our parents’ /the society ‘s blame on the victims perpetuate the act. Those beasts see themselves as heroes. Thank God for this awareness. Very soon the victims would have the guts to even castrate those animals. Watch out!

  2. Helens Nelson, I really admire your courage and stance. Really, I feel Nigeria is backwards when it comes to demystifying abuse. Very shallow minded. With the education you so passionate give, I hope the people start thinking straight. Keep up the good work dear

  3. Hmmmm! As a father of two lovely, beautiful, adorable, hardworking daughters, I can’t just imagine any of them going through the agonising torture of non-consensual, forceful sex notoriously referred to as rape! But more baffling is why a parent, a loving or even a hating parent, would choose to add to the pains of the child who suffered such inhuman, beastly horror by casting blames on her for such undeserved dehumanization. Such a parent is, to be very with words, a disgrace to parenthood. I am ashamed on their behalf!
